This station was one of the great misguided projects of 20th century Europe. Built by Spain's General Franco after he took power in the 1930's, Canfranc was to be the great transfer point between France and Spain. The fact it was nestled deep in the Pyrenees far from any established population centers, was of little interest to Franco. He coerced the French into joining him the project. Gare de Canfranc has played the role of the majestic station when featured in "Dr. Zhivago". These days it is an unintentional tourist attraction in this small town just over the French border.
